5Great product.

Size is perfect; I didn't want a 60" wide version. All parts and pieces needed to assemble were there and it was easy to assemble. Looks good too.

4Better than the top of your car

So he carrier I received is not exactly like the photo. Mine has plates that go on the front and back to help hold it together, not sure if I like that. The welder or the welding machine did not do a good job, the welds are ugly, most likely secure but looks like someone was learning or the machine needs calibrated. I think the coating will wear easily if you are not careful but the carrier itself seems like it will do the job. The quality seems ok but not great, I would have expected a little better for the price. I am not sure what the cheaper ones are like but this one will get the job done. One last thing, mine had obviously been repackaged and the inside boxes were torn pretty bad and the bolts were loose in the box. Everything was there except the tool it said would be with it. I have wrenches so not a problem, make sure you do too. I would probably buy again.

5A great tool

Purchased for a trip with extended family to get to an airport in the next state and back on an international trip. We were extremely pleased with the ease and performance of this tool. It is easy to assemble, easy to hook up to the vehicle, and it performed very well. It is a great alternative to a trailer or car top items that ultimately scratch up the top of your vehicle!

3The price was right. Smaller than they look in picures

I could not pass up trying these when I could get two pair for the less that I would pay for one of the big name brands.

First off a lot of assembly required. They don't come out of the box as shown in the photos. Each J is actually two parts you have to bolt together.

I was a little disappointing when I opened the boxes, much smaller with much thinner tubing that the pictures make them look. After assembling them and trying them out they are holding up and doing the job I needed them for.

The only real problem I have had so far is the straps it came with. The straps are a very poor design, trying to thread the strap though the buckle is nearly impossible under good conditions, but over your head with cold hands.... I had to throw them away and spend another $20 for a set of 4 ratcheting straps. (Caution if you use ratchet straps with these be careful not to over tighten, you could easily break the racks).
They also came with no instructions on how to use the straps, I had to travel to a local hardware store to see a similar design and ask how to thread it properly.

5Best rack AND best value

I did lots of research on what stand to buy. I was looking for a 4 bike rack that would allow me to have access to the back of our SUV. Then my neighbor bought the Thule Revolver. That was my other choice if I wasn't going to get this rack. So I was able to actually lift and use the Revolver. I bought this rack (the Softride). And both my neighbor and I agreed that the softride is better. He actually wished that he had NOT bought the Revolver. This rack is way less expensive and works more easily than the revolver. The Revolver is great, but it's really heavy to put on the car and requires 3 steps to swing the bikes away. The SoftRide moves down out of the way with just one pin pull. And it's the only rack that folds down (rather than swings away) that allows you to move it down WITH THE BIKES ON THE RACK. The Thule racks (like the Ridgeline) are not intended for you to swing the rack down while the bikes are mounted. Also, when you are not using the rack, you can remove the arms very easily. This is preferable to just folding them down (like most other racks do) because then the mounting accessories are not hanging on the back of your car where they could be stolen off the rack. So ... I highly recommend this rack. It's a sleek and functional design that does not put un-needed bulk on the back of your vehicle. Go ahead and buy it. You'll be happy.

5Should have bought this the 1st time. Great Bike Rack

Originally bought some other product that advertised 2" and 1.25" Hitch compatibility but returned it due to "sway" problem stemming from the 1.25" to 2" adapter (included)...

Having used and returned one, I got wise enough to heed the review feedback much better, and spring for this (versus my old purchase at ~$100).

Good
1. Tilt down mechanism is best of its kind. Even with four bikes loaded, I was able to tilt down and lift up. The spring loaded latch clicked on as I lift up, so I could do this alone every time. I was careful to tilt down with bikes loaded. Did not want to stress the mechanisms by just allowing it to drop (although there is no warnings in the manual to avoid this, but just wanted to be careful).
2. Rack is extended far enough out so that the rear window of the SUV could open and handle bar of the nearest bike did not interfere.
3. Built solid.
4. Screw-type hitch mount bar that eliminates any movement of the rack to hitch -- extremely quiet and no sway of any time.
5. Screw-type hitch mount with a lock.
6. Bike mounting mechanism is well-designed, and the anti-sway extension on each bike worked well.
7. The two horizontal bars are fairly close to each other, and this worked well w/ children's (girls to boot) bikes. Did not have any balancing issues w/ adult men's bikes.

Bad
1. The above #4 & #5 Screw-type hitch mount and lock combination is both good and bad. Bad part is that everytime I need to unmount the rack, I need a tool (hex wrench) and the included lock, although not flimsy, perhaps could be broken with some effort. User preference I guess. I would have equally been happy w/ normal 5/8" hitch bar (lockable) for quick disconnect/connect and live with some play.
2. Really nothing else. Even price is great relative to other bike racks that allows rear door access.

Helpful Hints/Comments.
1. Only way to stop casual thieves is to use the integrated cable lock -- otherwise the bikes could be stolen just by pulling out the spring loaded horizontal bars. Even if you use the cable bike lock through the two vertical bars and to your bikes, undoing the four [heavy duty] screws near the horizontal bar mounts would allow someone to take all the bikes (that may be locked together). So using the integrated cable lock is the only way to stop casual thieves who may have some handtools.
2. Refer to the included instruction on how to use the anti-sway mounts for the bike -- not very obvious just looking at it.
3. Carry a spare hex wrench in the car, if you want to remove the rack (for car wash, or off-roading, for instance).
4. On my SUV (GM Escalade ESV) the Hitch is fairly low to the ground, with this rack tilted down with adult 26" mountain bike loaded, there is about 1" ground clearance from the bottom of the bike tire to the ground. Bigger bike may not have much clearance. The rack tilted up (normal position), there is no clearance issue. The bottom of the bike tire is above the SUV bumper.

This is a great rack, and would recommend it to anyone.

5Great Bike Rack !!!!

I recently bought this rack for my trailer hitch. I took my bikes from TN to Walt Disney World without a problem. The design is excellent. The rack is very solid. I did have a small part broken during shipping. Softride customer service immediately shipped the new part. This rack cost more than most, but you get what you pay for.

2As delivered one star, after five minutes with a file, five stars!

This could not be assembled as it came.
I would have returned this and pushed for one which was correctly manufactured, but I needed it for last weekend's camping trip and did not have enough time to go back and forth with it.

The painted welds on the attachments hang up on the collar of the handle (because they extend too far) making it impossible to lock the attachments into place (the holes in the attachments did not line up with the holes in the handle so the locking pin could not pass through and lock), but I have a metal file and was not afraid to use it.
Five minutes later I had removed the offending few milimeters of extra material and after that, I have no complaints.

It is not to heavy for me to use (190lb middle aged 5'10" male), the shovel and hoe ends NOW attach firmly and allow a decent reach. Handle seems to work well with the jack.

If you are not confident that you can make the same modifications I did, I cannot reccomend this product, it would not assemble without modification.
I would also hesitate to buy anything more complicated from this manufacturer, it seems that they are missing some testing and/or quality control from this product line which I expect might well extend into their other offerings.

4Very handy tool

I had to grind down the welds on the shovel attachment as other reviewers have stated. Nothing major and the Dremel knocked it out in short order. The hoe attachment went on without issue. The real issue is that the shovel is basically flat and the business end has no edge so that has to be ground down much more than the weld. Once you do that you have to repaint it so it doesn't rust. Basically a cool idea but poorly designed. I don't know if the Hi-lift version is better but it has a premium price!

5Very Sturdy, Great Peace of Mind

Great set of tools to throw in the back of your truck, SUV or car. I like the idea of keeping tools in the car that will help me get out of the snow. Happy to say I did not need to use the shovel at all while driving this winter, but will keep it in the car in case we run into some bad off-roading conditions.

Tools feel quite sturdy, I wouldn't worry about them just snapping while you're using them.

First off-- bikes go on and off in a snap. The very first time I used this rack, it probably took me less than a minute. One of the really nice features is the design of the quick-release skewer. The cam mechanism is built into the front of the tray. This has two advantages:
- The long lever means you can also have a lot of travel in the clamp. The skewer goes from being clamped down to being wide enough to remove the fork, even with "lawyer nipples," just by moving the lever. That means no fiddling with the bolt tension every time you want to put the bike on the rack--just drop it in and clamp it.
- The same lock core that locks the bike to the carrier, locks the carrier to the loadbar. Turn one key and the whole assembly is secured.

The rest of the Peloton gives a similar impression of attentive design. The strap that holds the rear wheel down is easy to attach and easy to release. I would say the only downside is the somewhat 1990s-Volvo aesthetics.

5Easy to install, even easier to use

This may not be the top of the line front fork mounted bike rack that Thule offers... but it's all you need! The rack holds your bike absolutely secure (you can tell when you grab the bike to try and rock it and your whole car ends up rocking - not the bike!) Plus there are great You Tube videos out there showing you how to install it and how to use it. A total no-brainer!

it dose the job but the webbed straps seem to be way to thin, perhaps a little over priced but i can not complain to much, i add additional safety straps with just in case, but other then that it is a good idea and works just wish it used thicker wider straps

The rack system perfectly fits on my 2006 Saab 9-3. Allowed me to put on a Yakima rocket box pro for a 2500 mile trip.

Only down side (not even about function) is the mounting point flaps on the saab 9-3 are not removable and there is no way to cover up the screws/mounting points while the rack is on. This leaves them open to dust and debris as well as it is not very ascetically pleasing. With that said, the rack fits solid and was easy to install. I would buy it again if I needed another rack.

The rack worked well. Machining for the custom fit saab mount was off on two of the four mounts. I had to drill out the holes to fit properly.

I purchased this product for use on my Yakima MegaWarrior Basket to hold a full size spare on my 2006 Subaru WRX Wagon, it is a 215/65/16 tire on a 16x7 wheel. It works awesome; I paired it with a Master Lock Weatherproof Lock, very secure! I took this basket and carrier on a 1000 mile road/off-road trip through Michigan's UP in the middle of winter, it held strong on bumpy snowmobile trails, and sliding sideways on icy roads, thankfully I did not have to use it, but knowing it was there was a good security measure. It is very easy to use, even with winter gloves on. I would recommend this to others holding their spare on the roof. Very nice product!

5Excellent tire carrier

I have a Yakima LoadWarrior cargo basket, and this Yakima spare tire carrier is designed to go with it. Therefore, the installation was very simple, and the system seems bomb-proof. Drove a thousand miles with a full-size spare just last week, and while the aerodynamics obviously are diminished on the car (what would you expect from throwing a full-size spare on the roof of a car?), the tire seemed very secure because it is very strongly locked down onto the LoadWarrior cargo basket. And not only is the tire securely attached to the cargo basket, but the tire carrier also allows you to lock the tire to the cargo basket with a padlock. Very convenient. I wouldn't generally like the idea of traveling at 80 mph with a 45 pound tire on my roof, but this Yakima system of cargo basket and tire carrier bolted down to it makes you forget it's even there (except for a bit of added noise from the wind, though this is mitigated somewhat by the Yakima fairing attached to the front of the cargo basket). Super secure. And I'm not driving some big truck, either. All of this equipment is on top of a small 3-series BMW sedan, and it still feels solid, even cornering at high speed. I would definitely recommend this system to anyone who wants or needs to travel with a full-size spare. And on top of all that, there is still room left in the cargo basket for other gear.

5Useful, safe and easy to install when you have Yakima Rack

I got this bracket to hold my second spare on a Body Armor Roof Rack on my Jeep. Since this rack has thicker bars on the basket I can not use the brackets coming with the part so I have a hard time to install it. With the original brackets it would bemuch easier but that's my rack, not a general thing. My roof rack is in 8 feet height which makes it harder but it is doing its job very well. I'm still using additional straps, better safe than sorry.
I would recommend it to a friend.

5Best Bike Rack on the market!

Bought this to go with my original Hollywood Sportrider 2 bicycle rack so I would have a 4 bike rack when needed. This is the same quality as the original rack and very heavy duty.
It fit together just perfect with the original. I've used it several times as a 4 bike rack and it is the best bike rack out there! We wanted a rack that would be very stable, solidly made and carry our bikes in the normal upright position and be easy to load. We got all of these things with this rack system. The way the attachment to the vehicle receiver hitch is made the rack can be tightened to where there is no wobble in the rack even on rough terrain. Don't throw away your money on those so called "name brand" racks that you hang the bikes on and tie down with rubber straps on the rack. The straps break and it's a pain to load the bikes and to get them off. You look like you are baiting a hook with a wiggling worm and in the end you are not sure it's going to stay where you put it.
Hollywood Racks have a unique hold down system that can actually be worked with just one hand. The rack can be folded up with just one simple lock pin and can be removed from the vehicle hitch just as easily. No more wrestling with loading or unloading bikes for me since I got this rack system!
This is a real professional bike rack system.

I have a pickup with a relatively short tray (Mitsubishi Sportero) so I bought the Thule Bed-Rider Bike Carrier - 822XT. A relatively attractive piece that can hold up to three bikes, IF you buy an additional hitch. I really liked the piece even though I still had to take off my front wheel to transport my bike. The entire mechanism failed after less that two weeks. You can read about it in my other review. I cannot and would not recommend that solution until Thule gets it right.

My next purchase was a simple fork hitch. This meant I had to drill a couple of holes into the tray and have it mounted. I have a tray cover so after 1 hour of work, (had to drill through the tray cover (bed liner)as well as the metal, I then had to remove the tray liner so I could coat the holes I drilled, with a lubricant so it wont rust. Then I reinstalled the tray cover and THEN attached the fork mount which for the most part did what it was supposed to do. The problem is I still had to take the front wheel off and climb into the tray in order to mount and dismount the bike. I am a bit lazy so it turned me off from riding as much. My solution was to simply leave the bike in the tray of the van until I was ready (I am including as many details as possible so people are aware of exactly what these solutions mean you have to do).

Eventually a friend of mine recommended this. I bought it, it was promptly delivered and took 5 minutes to install. It looks good, is well made and now I don't have to take the front wheel off at any point. I just put my bike in the back and take it out when I am ready to go. I am seriously liking this piece. WARNING: You would still have to provide security for your bike since this does not allow you to really secure your bike. However with most solutions you would have to invest in a separate locking mechanism anyway so all things considered this is still a great product. And for a lazy guy like me its perfect.

4Well made pad
By frustrated
I would recommend it for any truck that it is designed to fit. Unfortunately, I have an Avalanche and the pad is too wide and the tailgate can't be closed with the top panels in place. My fault, not the manufacturers.

1Waste of money

I bought this product less than a year ago and it is already falling apart. The second time I used it one of the plastic fasteners broke. I have heard about people leaving this product on their truck all the time so I left mine on my truck for a week straight while doing a lot of biking and the straps started rotting,so far two of them have broke. It is also nearly impossible for one person to install it by their self. It would have been better if the straps inserted from the other side of the tailgate. You have to balance the tailgate with one hand while you try to reach under the truck and feed the straps up from the bottom. The back of my tailgate isn't in very good shape anyway but if it where I would be afraid to use this product. At the bottom the straps rub the paint pretty bad. I purchased this cover instead of a cheaper one that our local bike shop sells because I liked the Velcro straps that hold the bike. The one at the bike shop was another brand and did't have any. So far the Velcro straps are a joke. I only used them the first time I used the cover because they really don't do anything. Also it is nearly impossible to install the cover if the temperature is below 50 degrees. The plastic gets real stiff and is very hard to bend. I wish I would have never bought this product.

5Outstanding roof rack

Outstanding roof rack. Fastened easily to my older model van and stayed put while traveling. Liked the slots on the end of the bars for the straps I used to secure my load. Made the load more secure than having to trust the "s" hooks on luggage tie-downs.

3Loose parts, not universal but does the job

This is OK, but within a month of putting this on the car two of the four endcaps are gone. They slip on the end of the bars and are not secured with a screw or even a little ridge or lip. So over time, they pop off while you are driving. Not too big a problem as we mounted a safari rack over them, so the end caps aren't used for tie-down now. Also, the front leg of the part that grips the gutter is too small for our car so it cuts into the rubber on the gutter. It works, but is leaving permanent damage where it cut a slice in the gutter rubber.
