I have a pickup with a relatively short tray (Mitsubishi Sportero) so I bought the Thule Bed-Rider Bike Carrier - 822XT. A relatively attractive piece that can hold up to three bikes, IF you buy an additional hitch. I really liked the piece even though I still had to take off my front wheel to transport my bike. The entire mechanism failed after less that two weeks. You can read about it in my other review. I cannot and would not recommend that solution until Thule gets it right.
My next purchase was a simple fork hitch. This meant I had to drill a couple of holes into the tray and have it mounted. I have a tray cover so after 1 hour of work, (had to drill through the tray cover (bed liner)as well as the metal, I then had to remove the tray liner so I could coat the holes I drilled, with a lubricant so it wont rust. Then I reinstalled the tray cover and THEN attached the fork mount which for the most part did what it was supposed to do. The problem is I still had to take the front wheel off and climb into the tray in order to mount and dismount the bike. I am a bit lazy so it turned me off from riding as much. My solution was to simply leave the bike in the tray of the van until I was ready (I am including as many details as possible so people are aware of exactly what these solutions mean you have to do).
Eventually a friend of mine recommended this. I bought it, it was promptly delivered and took 5 minutes to install. It looks good, is well made and now I don't have to take the front wheel off at any point. I just put my bike in the back and take it out when I am ready to go. I am seriously liking this piece. WARNING: You would still have to provide security for your bike since this does not allow you to really secure your bike. However with most solutions you would have to invest in a separate locking mechanism anyway so all things considered this is still a great product. And for a lazy guy like me its perfect.

I would recommend it for any truck that it is designed to fit. Unfortunately, I have an Avalanche and the pad is too wide and the tailgate can't be closed with the top panels in place. My fault, not the manufacturers.

I bought this product less than a year ago and it is already falling apart. The second time I used it one of the plastic fasteners broke. I have heard about people leaving this product on their truck all the time so I left mine on my truck for a week straight while doing a lot of biking and the straps started rotting,so far two of them have broke. It is also nearly impossible for one person to install it by their self. It would have been better if the straps inserted from the other side of the tailgate. You have to balance the tailgate with one hand while you try to reach under the truck and feed the straps up from the bottom. The back of my tailgate isn't in very good shape anyway but if it where I would be afraid to use this product. At the bottom the straps rub the paint pretty bad. I purchased this cover instead of a cheaper one that our local bike shop sells because I liked the Velcro straps that hold the bike. The one at the bike shop was another brand and did't have any. So far the Velcro straps are a joke. I only used them the first time I used the cover because they really don't do anything. Also it is nearly impossible to install the cover if the temperature is below 50 degrees. The plastic gets real stiff and is very hard to bend. I wish I would have never bought this product.
